Magdalensberg

Magdalensberg is a mountain summit in the Gurktal Alps rising to about 1059 meters with numerous hiking routes crossing its terrain. The slopes are steep and offer paths suitable for different skill levels.

The mountain once hosted a Celtic settlement serving as the capital of the ancient kingdom of Noricum before Roman conquest took place. This early occupation left archaeological layers that still reveal insights into that period.

The mountain carries names reflecting its history across multiple cultures. Visitors can sense this connection in the landscape itself, where Austrian and Slovenian influences meet.

The summit features a guesthouse with lodging and dining for year-round activities. Visitors should bring sturdy footwear and weather-appropriate clothing, as conditions vary significantly by season.

Excavations reveal a Roman settlement with preserved murals created by artists around 100 BC. These finds show the mountain held major importance for ancient trade networks and cultural exchange.
