Schloss Niederosterwitz

Schloss Niederosterwitz is a medieval castle in Sankt Georgen am Längsee built on a hook-shaped floor plan. The eastern wing was constructed after 1645, with subsequent additions expanding the southern and western sides, while flat cornice bands and distinctive round windows mark the facade.

Ownership transferred to Christoph Khevenhüller von Aichelberg in 1541, then to Anton von Aichholt in 1645. The Khevenhüller family acquired it in 1690 and maintained control over subsequent centuries.

The chapel displays a columned interior space with an altar from 1670 that features cypress ornaments beneath a cloister vault. Visitors can see how this religious room combined decorative elements from different periods into a cohesive family worship space.

The castle sits on sloped terrain and is best explored on foot, as its various wings are positioned at different elevations. Approaching from the east side provides the clearest orientation, while the terraces around the chapel involve steeper pathways.

A distinctive feature is the hexagonal chapel in the northeastern section, built on a raised terrace that sets it apart visually. This unusual form differs notably from typical chapel designs found in other Austrian castles of the same period.
