Bonn-Matreier Hütte, Mountain hut in Lienz District, Austria.
Bonn-Matreier Hütte is a mountain refuge at 2,750 meters elevation in the Venediger Group, offering views across multiple Alpine peaks. The facility provides private rooms with 13 beds, communal dormitories with 40 beds, and an additional winter room for 8 people.
The hut was built in 1931 as a joint project of the German and Austrian Alpine Associations. This arrangement made it possible to better accommodate and support the many mountaineers in the Eastern Alps.
The hut is known for its family operation where fresh bread is baked daily, making it a gathering point for hikers in the high mountains. Visitors appreciate the personal care and welcoming atmosphere created by the long experience of the team.
It is advisable to book your stay in advance online, as the accommodation can fill quickly especially during the season. The location above 2,700 meters means that proper mountain gear and experience are needed to reach the hut.
What makes this refuge special is its joint management by two countries - it is the only mountain hut run together by both Alpine Associations for decades. This unusual partnership shows itself in daily cooperation and makes it a symbol of borderless mountaineering.
