Feuerstein, Mountain peak in Stubai Alps, Austria and Italy

Feuerstein is a mountain group in the Stubai Alps straddling the border between Austria and Italy. The massif features multiple peaks with glaciers and steep rocky ridges that shape the landscape around Neustift im Stubaital.

The twin peaks were first traversed around 1855 during the Franziszeische Landesaufnahme survey. The western summit's first tourist ascent was on 14 September 1869 by historian Julius Ficker with guides Pankraz Gleinser and Andreas Pfurtscheller; the eastern summit was climbed by a tourist from London in 1871, starting from the Pflerschtal.

The name Feuerstein comes from the oxidised, iron-bearing rock of the twin peak. The two summits, 400 metres apart, are the Östlicher Feuerstein (3268 m, Montarso di Levante) and the Westlicher Feuerstein (3245 m, Montarso di Ponente). The normal route reaches the summit cross of the eastern peak.

The best time to visit is from June to September when higher trails are accessible. Visitors should prepare for strong alpine winds and rapid weather changes that are typical for this mountainous terrain.

The mountain holds position 41 among 749 peaks in the Stubai Alps, with a prominence of 442 meters from the surrounding terrain.
