Übeltalferner

Übeltalferner is a glacier in the Stubai Alps that spreads across a large area of this alpine region. The ice formations shape the landscape with white expanses framed by high mountain ridges.

The glacier formed during ice ages and reshaped itself over thousands of years through natural forces. Beginning in the 1800s, its eastern lobe started to shrink significantly, bringing major changes to its form.

The name comes from the steep rocky walls that frame the basin where it sits, reflecting how mountain communities name their landscape. Climbers and hikers who visit this place connect with it as a waypoint on major alpine routes.

The eastern section, known as Ebenferner, has changed dramatically since the late 1800s and serves as an important indicator of glacier shifts. This specific area shows especially clearly how sensitive alpine glaciers are to climate changes.
