Sonklarspitze, Mountain peak on Austria-Italy border in Stubai Alps.
Sonklarspitze is a mountain peak in the Stubai Alps located on the Austria-Italy border, reaching 3444 meters in elevation. The massif is shaped by the Triebenkarlasferner glacier to the west and Übeltalferner glacier to the east.
The first recorded ascent took place on August 5, 1869, when Richard Gutberlet, Alois Tanzer, and S. Holzmann reached the summit as part of early alpine exploration. This climb represents the period when mountaineers were systematically mapping the high peaks of the region.
The mountain carries both German and Italian names, showing the linguistic divide between the Austrian and Italian sides of the Tyrol border. This reflects how local communities on each side identify with their own languages.
Climbers typically start their ascent from mountain huts such as Müllerhütte at 3143 meters or Becherhaus at 3190 meters. These huts operate during the warmer months, roughly from June through September.
A summit cross stands roughly 100 meters north of the highest point at 3449 meters, serving as a reference marker for climbers on the mountain. Many visitors find this cross helpful when navigating the summit area.
