Biberacher Hütte, Mountain hut at Schadona Pass in Vorarlberg, Austria.
The Biberacher Hütte is a mountain hut sitting at 1,846 feet (1,846 m) elevation at the Freschenpass, a mountain pass in the Austrian state of Vorarlberg, close to the Bavarian border. It has around 74 sleeping places spread across private rooms and dormitories, making it a base for walks through the Lechquellen Mountains.
The hut was built in 1911 by the Biberach section of the German Alpine Club, which wanted to give hikers a fixed base in the Lechquellen range. It has been renovated and extended over the decades, but still carries the name of the German city of Biberach an der Riß.
The hut sits right on the border between Vorarlberg and Bavaria, which makes it a natural meeting point for hikers from two different regions and cultures. The food served here follows local Vorarlberg traditions, with dishes that reflect what mountain people in this area have eaten for generations.
The hut can be reached on foot from several surrounding valleys, with walking times ranging from about 2 to 4 hours depending on which path you take. Mountain boots and weather-appropriate clothing are essential, as conditions can change quickly at this elevation.
Although the hut stands on Austrian soil, it is still owned and managed by the German city of Biberach's Alpine Club section, not by any Austrian mountain organization. This cross-border ownership is unusual and reflects a long tradition of German alpine clubs building refuges on the Austrian side of the Alps.
