Dr.-Vogelgesang-Klamm, Natural monument in Spital am Pyhrn, Austria
The Dr.-Vogelgesang-Klamm is a narrow limestone gorge near Spital am Pyhrn with waterfalls flowing throughout its length. Wooden and stone steps form the walkway through the tight rock formations, allowing visitors to experience the canyon up close.
The gorge first opened to tourists in 1906 following efforts to make it accessible to the public. After a major flood damaged it in 1913, it was completely rebuilt and reopened between 1926 and 1927.
The site is named after Dr. Moritz Vogelgesang, the local physician who pushed to open this gorge to the public in the early 1900s. As you walk through, you notice how the wooden structures and stone steps reflect this commitment to sharing the natural formation with visitors.
Access is typically available from May through October when weather conditions are safe. Parking is available at the entrance, and the pathway connects to hiking routes in the surrounding region.
The wooden structures require careful maintenance each spring to address damage from snow weight and frost. This ongoing behind-the-scenes work is what keeps the pathway safe for the many people who visit each year.
