Spanish Military Hospital of Vienna
Spanish Military Hospital of Vienna, Protected historic military hospital in Alsergrund, Austria.
The former Spanish Military Hospital stands on Boltzmanngasse in Vienna and displays architectural features from the early 18th century when it was built. The structure with its historical design is today maintained as a protected monument and carefully preserved.
Emperor Charles VI founded this medical facility in 1717 to serve personnel from his newly acquired territories in Sicily, Milan, Naples, and the Spanish Netherlands. The building in its current form was constructed in 1718, replacing an earlier medical site.
The building now houses residential quarters for clergy seminaries of the Roman Catholic dioceses of Vienna, Eisenstadt, and Sankt Pölten. This purpose connects religious education with a place protected for its historical importance.
The building has held protected monument status since 2003 and can be viewed from the outside while preserving its historical character. Visitors can explore the external architecture but should keep in mind it functions as an active residential facility.
Before the current building was constructed in 1718, the site contained a medical facility that treated patients during the 1713 plague outbreak. This ongoing medical use shows how long this location mattered for Vienna's care of the sick.
