Castle Saalhof is a medieval fortress in Maishofen, Austria, built at an elevation of 766 meters. It features vaulted ceilings and interior woodwork made from Swiss stone pine.
The fortress dates from the 11th century, with the first documented owner recorded as Oswald Eisenstang in 1423. Major renovations took place around 1600, shaping the structure that stands today.
The Meierhaus on the eastern side housed the estate manager, farmhands and servants; its roof ridge is dated 1686, and around 1814 the building served as the school for Maishofen. The castle, Meierhaus and a wayside shrine in the garden have been under federal monument protection since 1992. The buildings are privately owned and not open to the public, though apartments inside the castle have been rented to guests since 2006.
Visitors can stay in renovated apartments inside the castle and enjoy direct access to hiking trails and skiing in the Pinzgau region. The location offers convenient access to outdoor activities for those who want to explore the mountains.
A marble relief carved in 1606 sits above the main entrance, marking the Renaissance renovations of that period. This artwork remains visible today, showing how the castle was transformed during the Renaissance era.
