Greizer Hütte, Mountain hut in Zillertal Alps, Austria.
The Greizer Hütte is a mountain hut in the Zillertal Alps in Tyrol, Austria, sitting at the head of the Trogtal Valley. It sleeps around 100 guests and faces the Floitenkees glacier and the high peaks that surround it.
The hut was built in 1893 to support climbers and hikers moving through this part of the Zillertal Alps. It was one of the first fixed points in an area that had little infrastructure, and it opened the valley to more regular mountain travel.
The hut is known for serving dishes made with milk and cheese from its own goat herd, kept on the surrounding slopes. This small detail gives the place a working farm feeling that sets it apart from most mountain stops.
The hut is reached after a hike of around four hours from the village of Ginzling, and a luggage transport service runs during the open season. A visit is most practical between June and October, when the trails are clear and the full range of services is available.
The hut sits directly on the Berlin High Trail, one of the most traveled multi-day routes in the Zillertal Alps, making it a natural overnight stop for those crossing the range. Walkers doing the full route often stay here more than once across different sections of the journey.
