Galzigbahn, Mountain gondola lift in St. Anton am Arlberg, Austria
The Galzigbahn is a large-cabin gondola lift in St. Anton am Arlberg, Tyrol, linking the village center directly to the Galzig mountain station. Each cabin holds several dozen people and travels along two carrying cables, rising from the village through forest and into open alpine terrain.
A cable car has connected St. Anton to the Galzig area since the 1930s, when the Arlberg was first developing as a ski destination. The original line was replaced in 2006 with a new system capable of moving far more people per hour.
For most skiers heading out from St. Anton, this lift is where the day on the mountain begins, and the lower station fills early with people preparing their gear. The shared ride up gives a first look at the scale of the Arlberg terrain before anyone reaches the top.
The lower station sits in the center of St. Anton and is easy to reach on foot from most parts of the village. Midmorning and the end of the ski day tend to be the busiest times, so arriving early gives you a shorter wait.
The Galzig summit station sits at a crossing point where several lift lines from different valleys meet, meaning riders can continue in multiple directions without taking another uphill connection. This makes the station more of a hub than a simple endpoint on the mountain.
