Schöckl Transmitter, Broadcasting transmitter on Schöckl Mountain, Austria
The Schöckl Transmitter is a 100 meter tall lattice tower structure standing on the summit of Schöckl Mountain in Styria. The facility broadcasts radio and television signals across the surrounding region from its elevated location.
The lattice tower was constructed in 1956 and has dominated the mountain landscape since then. Steel guy wires were added later to reinforce and stabilize the structure against wind and weather.
The transmitter is a familiar sight to people living in the surrounding valleys and has shaped the landscape for decades. It connects residents through radio and television signals that reach into homes throughout the region.
The facility itself is not open to the public, but the mountain can be reached via marked hiking trails that connect through the area near St Radegund. The trails offer unobstructed views of the transmitter from various angles for photography.
In 1931 the mountain was the launch site for Friedrich Schmiedl's experimental rocket flights designed to carry mail. These early attempts are considered forerunners of modern rocket technology and drew significant attention at the time.
