Großes Walsertal, Alpine valley in Vorarlberg, Austria
Großes Walsertal is a V-shaped alpine valley in Vorarlberg between the Bregenz Forest mountains and the Lechquellen Mountains. Six municipalities with traditional villages and hamlets are connected through the valley by the Faschina road.
Walser people migrated from the Valais region in Switzerland during the 13th century and established permanent settlements in this remote alpine valley. This migration shaped the valley's development and character for centuries to come.
The valley is home to the Walser people, whose language and way of life remain visible in the buildings, traditions, and daily customs of residents today. Local crafts, farming practices, and seasonal celebrations continue to shape the character of the communities here.
The area is most accessible during warmer months when roads are clear of snow and hiking trails are open. The valley is rural and quiet, with light traffic and plenty of space to explore on foot or by car.
Since 2000 the valley holds UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status, recognizing the balanced relationship between human settlement and the natural environment. This designation reflects how residents have practiced agriculture and daily life in harmony with the landscape.
