Helenenschacht, Historical mining tower in Ritzing, Austria
The Helenenschacht tower rises 460 meters above sea level, featuring a brick-clad structure that marks the entrance to former coal mining operations.
The tower, constructed in 1882, received its name from Helene Flandorfer, whose family operated the coal mine until the early 1920s.
The preserved mining tower stands as a memorial to the mining community that worked in challenging conditions between Austria and Hungary until 1955.
Visitors can access the tower site through marked trails, which connect to broader hiking paths exploring the surrounding former mining territory.
The structure served as both a mining shaft and weather monitoring station, with its location straddling international borders affecting worker regulations.
