Károly observation tower in Sopron

Károly observation tower is a stone structure standing on a hillside near Sopron that rises 23 meters from the ground at approximately 398 meters elevation. From the top, visitors gain views across the city and surrounding protected natural areas.

The tower was built in 1936 to replace an earlier wooden structure dating to 1876, designed by architect Oszkár Winkler. Local materials and traditional construction methods were used in its creation.

The tower houses a permanent botanical exhibition on its lower level that showcases the local plant life visitors encounter throughout the region. The displays help people understand the natural surroundings they see while hiking.

Multiple hiking trails connect to the tower and allow access from different directions while supporting nature observation and photography activities. Sturdy footwear is helpful since the paths lead uphill.

Following renovations in the 1990s, a local civic organization took over management and established educational facilities at the site. This development turned it into a popular destination for school groups and nature enthusiasts.
