Frauenmauerhöhle, Natural cave system in Styria, Austria.
The Frauenmauerhöhle is a cave system located in the Hochschwab mountains that contains extensive underground passages and multiple chambers. The cave features various rock formations and ice deposits that have developed within its passages over time.
The cave was first explored by miners from Eisenerz in 1820 and received its initial mapping in 1834. A significant connection to the nearby Langsteinhöhle was established in 1961.
Several memorial crosses mark locations where visitors lost their lives, including three tourists in 1930 who entered without adequate lighting.
Visitors should be prepared for uneven terrain and wear appropriate footwear, as the pathways within the cave can be demanding. Tours are available during the warmer months and require reasonable physical fitness.
An ice chamber near the western entrance preserves ice year-round despite being located beneath the surface. This natural phenomenon makes the cave a notable example of subterranean ice formations in the region.
