Griesmauer

Griesmauerkogel is a summit in the Hochschwab range, rising to approximately 2,000 meters with sheer limestone rock faces and open mountain meadows covering its slopes. The peak offers views across the Northern Styrian Alps and connects to several neighboring summits via ridge trails.

The mountain has served as a landmark for travelers crossing the Northern Styrian Alps since at least the 16th century. Its prominent position made it valuable for route-finding on foot paths through the alpine terrain.

Local mountain clubs organize annual summer solstice celebrations at the summit, continuing centuries-old Alpine traditions.

Marked trails reach the summit from Gsollhütte mountain hut, with the western route offering the most gradual approach. Sturdy footwear is essential as the terrain is rocky and weather can change rapidly at this elevation.

The exposed limestone layers at the summit display geological formations spanning more than 100 million years of Earth history. Visitors who examine the rock faces closely may notice fossils and traces of ancient marine environments within the stone.
