TAC-Spitze, Alpine summit in Hochschwab range, Styria, Austria.
TAC-Spitze is a mountain summit in the Hochschwab range in Styria, reaching 2019 meters with steep rocky slopes along a ridge called Griesmauer. The mountain features a distinctive three-peak formation that stands out in the surrounding Alpine landscape.
The first recorded ascent took place in May 1879 when climbers G. Geyer, J. Bullmann, E. Augustin, and J. Horalek reached the summit. The rock formations consist of Wettersteinkalk from the Triassic period, evidence of the ancient geological origins beneath the Alpine peaks.
The name comes from Techniker-Alpen-Club, an Austrian mountaineering organization that has guided climbers for generations. This connection reflects how deeply such clubs shaped the Alpine culture of the region.
The ascent starts at Hirscheggsattel at 1699 meters and follows marked trails through loose gravel to a secured climbing route called Hubert-Wieser-Steig. This path requires sure-footedness and solid hiking boots, so visitors should be physically fit and have Alpine experience.
The neighboring peaks and Griesmauer ridge create a distinctive sight line from the valley below that often catches visitors by surprise. This characteristic profile makes the mountain recognizable from different angles and gives it its visual identity in the Alpine chain.
