Stiftskaserne, Military barracks in Neubau, Austria.
The Stiftskaserne is a military barracks complex in the Neubau district of Vienna, made up of several wings built across different periods. It sits along Mariahilfer Strasse and includes interior courtyards connected by passageways and buildings from different architectural periods.
The site was founded in 1663 by court chamber councilor Johann Konrad Richthausen as a charitable foundation for orphaned children, before later passing into military use. Over time it grew into a training center for officers and became one of the key military sites in Vienna.
The complex houses the Austrian Military Library, one of the oldest military libraries in the country. Those who gain access can browse historical maps, books and documents spanning several centuries of Austrian military history.
The barracks remain an active military facility, so public access is limited and not guaranteed at all times. Anyone wishing to visit the library or any part of the site should check entry conditions before going.
The name of the barracks comes from the German word Stift, referring to the original charitable foundation of 1663, not to a religious institution as many assume. This link between a social welfare origin and a long military use is rare for a single site in Vienna.
