Leopold Museum, Art museum in MuseumsQuartier, Vienna, Austria.
The Leopold Museum displays more than 8,300 works of Austrian art inside a white limestone building covering 5,400 square meters across four levels. The rooms spread over several floors and offer rotating galleries alongside a large permanent exhibition on Viennese modernism.
Rudolf and Elisabeth Leopold assembled the collection over fifty years, acquiring works by Egon Schiele and Gustav Klimt when these artists received little recognition. The building finally opened in 2001 after the collection had been transferred into a foundation.
The name honors Rudolf Leopold, a Viennese ophthalmologist and collector who donated his holdings to establish the institution. Visitors today see how turn-of-the-century Viennese artists explored new directions in painting and design, often breaking away from older conventions.
The building opens from Friday to Wednesday between 10:00 and 18:00, with Thursday hours extending to 21:00, and tickets are available online in advance. Exhibition rooms span multiple floors with elevators and wide corridors, making navigation straightforward.
The institution holds the largest collection of Egon Schiele worldwide, with 42 paintings, 187 original prints, and numerous manuscripts. These works show the artist in all creative phases and allow a deep look into his development.
