Gudenus cave

Gudenus cave is a small natural cavity that extends about 22 meters into the rock face. It sits roughly 7.5 meters above the Little Krems River with a width of about 2 to 3 meters throughout its passage.

The cave served as a shelter during the Stone Age when Neanderthals and early modern humans lived in the region. Excavations in the 1800s uncovered tools and animal bones that reveal how long people used this location.

The name comes from the Gudenus family, who owned and managed the land for centuries. Today it serves as a place where visitors can connect with the deep past of human habitation in this region.

A visit requires sturdy shoes and a flashlight since the entrance is set deep into the rock. Guided tours are offered and help visitors understand the archaeological layers and finds in context.

A bone flute fragment from prehistoric times was discovered here, one of the earliest signs of music-making. This small piece of bone shows that people thousands of years ago already made music.
