Burg Albrechtsberg an der Großen Krems

Burg Albrechtsberg an der Großen Krems is a three-story castle positioned on a hillside above the Große Krems valley. The structure includes defensive towers, fortified walls, and a Baroque church completed in 1770 featuring vaulted ceilings designed by architect Matthias Munggenast.

The castle first appeared in written records in 1230 under the ownership of Konrad von Albrechtsperge and subsequently passed between various Austrian noble families. In the 1700s it underwent renovations that led to the construction of the Baroque church.

The parish church within the castle grounds displays Baroque design and has served as a spiritual center for the local community since the 1700s. Visitors can observe the craftsmanship in its vaulted spaces, which remain largely unchanged.

The castle operates as a private residence, meaning interior spaces are not open to the public. You can best appreciate the structure and its setting by viewing the exterior and surroundings from the village below.

The castle contains an original smoke kitchen from the 1700s equipped with a pyramid-shaped chimney system. This rare feature reveals how food was prepared and smoked in the kitchen before modern cooking technologies became available.
