Burgruine Hohenstein, Medieval castle ruin in Gföhl, Austria
The castle ruins stand on a steep cliff above the Krems River, with walls reaching 2.30 meters in thickness and multiple window openings.
The first documented reference to the castle dates from 1156, mentioning Reinpreht de Hohinstaine in an official ducal document.
A chapel dedicated to Saint Peter, established within the castle walls in 1377, indicates the religious practices of medieval inhabitants.
The castle ruins remain under the ownership of Freiherren von Gudenus family since 1725, continuing a centuries-old lineage of stewardship.
The structure transitioned from a functioning castle to abandonment by 1456, marking an early end to its active military and residential purposes.
