Schloss Vogelsang

Schloss Vogelsang is a castle in Steyr featuring three stories, a rectangular floor plan, and four corner towers with dressed stone forming the foundation level. The structure now serves as residential apartments and defines the streetscape along Preuenhueberstraße with its distinctive profile.

Josef Werndl commissioned the castle's construction in 1873 and sent architect Anton Plochberger to Scotland to draw inspiration from that country's building traditions. The structure emerged as a result of this transatlantic architectural influence and subsequently shaped the town's character.

The castle served as an exhibition venue during the 1884 Industrial and Electrical Exhibition, showcasing technological progress in the region.

You can view the exterior architecture from Preuenhueberstraße 14, since the castle now contains private residences and the interior is not open to visitors. The location is easy to reach and the facade is clearly visible from the street.

A glass house structure crowning the roof uniquely illuminates the main staircase, while small windows from the 1920s reveal how the attic space was later developed. These architectural details visible from outside show how the castle was adapted over time.
