Rappenlochschlucht, Natural canyon in Dornbirn, Austria
The Rappenlochschlucht is a narrow canyon in Dornbirn carved through limestone by the Dornbirner Ache river. The gorge extends for hundreds of meters with sheer rock walls on both sides, creating a dramatic natural corridor.
A footbridge was first built in 1791 to connect the area to Ebnit, and the crossing has been reconstructed multiple times since then. The bridge represents ongoing efforts to maintain access through this challenging terrain.
The canyon forms part of the Dornbirn nature experience network, connecting the city's industrial heritage with natural formations and hydroelectric infrastructure.
Walking through the canyon is straightforward and offers natural cooling from the high walls on warm days. The ground becomes slippery after rain, so sturdy footwear and careful footing are recommended.
A major rockfall in 2011 significantly altered the canyon's structure and prompted a complete redesign of the hiking paths. This natural event remains visible in the reshaped landscape today.
