Staufen

Staufen is a mountain with a prominent cross at its summit near Dornbirn. The cross marks the endpoint of several hiking trails and can be seen from various directions across the region.

The cross was erected in the mid-20th century as a traditional Alpine marker. It represents the enduring connection between mountain communities and religious traditions in the Alpine region.

The cross marks a gathering place where hikers and mountain climbers pause to share the view and enjoy a sense of community. On clear days, visitors stop here to look out over the landscape and connect with others who have made the climb.

The mountain is accessible via a well-marked hiking trail starting from Karren mountain station, covering about 6 kilometers. The route is manageable on foot, but beginners should allow plenty of time and wear sturdy footwear.

During winter solstice, the cross casts a shadow that points precisely toward the center of Dornbirn. This natural projection creates a striking visual effect across the valley that is particularly noticeable on that day.
