Penken, Alpine summit in Mayrhofen, Austria
Penken is an alpine summit in the Zillertal Alps reaching 2,095 meters in elevation, with numerous trails crisscrossing the mountainside. From here you can see across the valley and neighboring peaks in all directions.
The mountain region became accessible in the middle of the 20th century when the first cable car was built from Mayrhofen, opening it up as a destination for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts. This infrastructure development transformed the area into a popular recreational spot.
The Granatkapelle is a modern chapel on the mountain, designed to blend into the alpine landscape with its clean architectural lines. Visitors pause here during their time on the slopes to rest and take in the views.
The Penkenbahn gondola takes about 30 minutes to reach the upper station, and once there you can choose from different ways to explore depending on your interests. Multiple marked paths and mountain restaurants are scattered across the slopes to guide your route.
A circular hiking route loops around the entire mountain connecting several mountain huts in a relatively easy walk. Along the way you pass a small reservoir that mirrors the surrounding peaks beautifully.
