Sudetendeutsche Hütte, Mountain refuge in Hohe Tauern National Park, Austria.
The Sudetendeutsche Hütte sits at 2,650 meters (8,694 feet) in the Granatspitz Mountains, ringed by peaks above 3,000 meters (9,843 feet) such as Wellachköpf and Muntanitz. It accommodates visitors in multi-bed rooms with 20 spaces, double rooms with 2 beds, and basic dormitory sleeping areas.
The German Alpine Club built this shelter between 1927 and 1929 as a central base in the southern Granatspitz mountains. It was established during a period of growing mountaineering activity in Austria.
The hut serves as a meeting point for mountaineers traveling between the Venediger and Glockner ranges. Visitors experience the shared traditions of alpine climbing in its simple, straightforward setting.
The hut remains accessible throughout the year, though winter offers more basic facilities. Expect challenging mountain terrain, limited water and power supply, and longer approaches to reach the site.
A small alpine lake mirrors the surrounding peaks near the hut. Supplies reach the remote location through a dedicated cable car system from Steiner Alm, which keeps operations running year-round.
