Synagoge im alten AKH Wien

The Synagogue in the Old AKH Vienna is a 1903 building located within the grounds of the former General Hospital. The structure displays original architectural features and a restored facade that reflects the style of that era.

The building was designed in 1903 by Max Fleischer and created with funds from the Israelite Cultural Community of Vienna as a prayer space for Jewish patients at the hospital. Its location within the hospital complex later protected it from destruction during periods of persecution in Austria.

The space reflects the role of Jewish spiritual life within the hospital community. Visitors can experience how the room functioned through artistic interventions that reveal the layout and purpose it once served.

The building stands in Vienna's ninth district on Alser Strasse and functions today as a memorial site where events and seminars take place. Visitors should check in advance about access times, as entry may be limited to scheduled occasions.

The building survived the destruction of 1938 because it was located within the hospital grounds and was not easily accessible. After the war it was repurposed as a transformer station for many years before eventually undergoing extensive restoration.
