Südbahnhofbrücke, Urban transportation bridge at Arsenal district, Vienna, Austria.
The Südbahnhofbrücke is a road bridge in the Arsenal district spanning 60 meters and connecting Franz-Grill-Strasse to Arsenalstrasse. Two Y-shaped pillars support the structure, which features two wide deck levels.
Construction started in 2010 following a design by Albert Wimmer, but opening was delayed until August 2018 due to technical requirements. The bridge was built as part of the area's transformation after the old station was demolished.
The bridge takes its name from the former South Railway Station, demolished in 2009 to make room for Vienna's central station. This name connection helps visitors understand the area's transformation over time.
The bridge provides separate lanes for vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians with good accessibility for all users. A spiral ramp from Arsenalstrasse offers stairs-free access for those on foot or bicycle.
Each supporting pillar required 600 cubic meters of concrete, and the deck segments lean toward each other in an unusual configuration. This distinctive design makes the bridge a notable example of modern engineering in the city.
