Arsenal

The Arsenal is a large complex of several connected buildings with red brick walls and symmetrical facades. The site spreads across a substantial area with detailed architectural features that show the craftsmanship of the 1800s.

The complex was built in the 1850s as a weapons storage facility for the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. It played a central role in the military infrastructure of the empire for producing and storing military equipment.

The Military History Museum inside shows how Austrian military forces evolved from the Middle Ages through the 20th century. You can see weapons, uniforms, and personal items from soldiers that reflect daily life across different periods.

The complex is easily reached by public transit, especially the Schlachthausgasse subway station nearby. Wear comfortable shoes since the site is large and exploring the different sections takes time.

Since 2018, apartments were added inside the historic buildings, turning the old military site into a mixed-use place. This change shows how industrial monuments find new life and use today.
