Funkturm im Arsenal

Funkturm im Arsenal is a 155-meter-tall concrete tower that rises above Vienna's third district with a design based on straight lines and geometric forms. The structure houses data centers and communications equipment that support the city's modern networks.

The building was completed in 1975 from designs by architects Max Agnese and Kurt Eckel, first serving as the main broadcast facility for ORF television and radio programs. Until 2001, the tower played a central role in Austria's broadcasting system before its function shifted to digital communications.

The tower represents how Vienna shifted from traditional radio broadcasting to digital communication networks. Visitors can see how technology became part of the city's infrastructure and daily life.

The tower is located in the third district and is easy to spot from the street due to its height above the surrounding area. Keep in mind this is an active work facility, so interior access is generally not available to visitors.

The tower stands on a site with an industrial past where weapons were once manufactured, which gave the location its distinctive name. Despite its technical purpose, it appears today as a piece of modernist architecture from an era when technology symbolized progress and hope.
