Theater Phönix, Independent theater stage in Linz, Austria
Theater Phönix occupies the former Phönix cinema building at Wienerstraße 25, on the southern edge of Linz's city centre near the Unionkreuzung. The three-storey facade of seven window axes is painted mid-blue with a cluster of near-vertical white lines, a pattern echoed by the black-and-white name sign on the entrance canopy. The former cinema auditorium was converted into the theatre hall.
Theater Phönix was founded in 1989 as a free middle-scale stage in Linz and took over the building at Wienerstraße 25, where the Phönix cinema had operated for decades; the cinema auditorium was converted into the theatre hall. Georg Schmiedleitner, one of the co-founders, was artistic director from 1989 to 1996. In November 2014 Susanne Lietzow's staging of Nestroy's Höllenangst won the Nestroy Theatre Prize for best provincial production.
The venue hosts contemporary works and collaborates with local artists making their debut performances. The spaces also serve as venues for discussions and workshops that connect to Linz's cultural life.
The entrance on Wienerstraße has three steps and a wheelchair stairlift leading up to the four glass doors of the portal. The club room on the first floor opens only during events. Three light columns stand in front of the building, before two adjoining outdoor dining areas.
The theatre frequently creates projects combining theatre with music, dance, and visual art. This blending of different art forms appears in many productions that push beyond traditional theatrical boundaries.
