Schloss Altkettenhof, Baroque castle in Schwechat, Austria
Schloss Altkettenhof is a castle in Schwechat featuring neobaroque architectural style with multiple wings and expansive grounds. The building displays classical neobaroque characteristics through its symmetrical facade and decorative details typical of this design approach.
The building was first documented in 1270 and underwent reconstruction following the Ottoman siege of 1529. It later served as a residence for a regional nobleman, establishing its role as an important family seat in the area.
The castle was once central to regional textile production after a cotton mill was established on the grounds in 1766. Visitors can trace this industrial heritage through the layout and structures that still reflect the building's role in the community's economic life.
The castle currently houses a district court and justice school serving the region's legal education and administrative needs. Visitors should be aware that certain areas may have restricted access due to the building's official functions.
The brewing entrepreneur Anton Dreher Junior completely transformed the building between 1902 and 1903, creating the neobaroque appearance visible today. This renovation shows how an early 20th-century industrialist reinterpreted the historical structure according to his own vision.
