Pfarrkirche Schwechat

Pfarrkirche Schwechat, Baroque church in Schwechat, Austria.

Pfarrkirche Schwechat is a baroque church building featuring a prominent bell tower with tall niches and an ornate western facade decorated with stone figures of David and Moses. The main entrance is flanked by the former parish house and school building, which together form a unified architectural ensemble.

The bell tower was completed in late baroque style during 1757, while the main church building was finished and consecrated in 1765. This two-phase construction reflects the gradual development of the site.

The high altar features a large painting by Martin Johann Schmidt showing Apostle James preaching to crowds. This artwork shapes the spiritual focus visitors encounter inside the church.

The church is located at Hauptplatz 5 and is easily accessible from various directions within Schwechat's center. As a protected monument, visitors should observe respectful behavior while inside.

The church ceiling sustained severe bomb damage during World War II, resulting in the loss of valuable frescoes by Franz Anton Maulbertsch. These losses remain visible today as traces of the wartime destruction the building endured.
