Schwechat

Schwechat is a municipality in the Bruck an der Leitha District that spreads across both sides of the Schwechat River and comprises several neighborhoods including Kledering, Mannswörth, and Rannersdorf. The area sits at an elevation of about 162 meters and includes the territory of Vienna International Airport, Austria's primary aviation hub.

The area has its roots in the Roman settlement of Ala Nova and was first documented in 1334. An important event occurred in 1683 when Emperor Leopold I met with Polish King Jan Sobieski at this location.

The name Schwechat comes from the river of the same name that flows through the town and has shaped life here for centuries. The Dreher Brewery has defined the town's identity since its founding in the 18th century and made Schwechater beer a well-known regional brand.

The area is easy to reach thanks to the international airport located here and its good transport connections. Visitors should note that the municipality includes both industrial zones with refineries and residential neighborhoods, so planning a route based on your interests is recommended.

The municipality is home to refineries of OMV, Austria's national oil corporation, which survived intense bombing during World War II. These industrial facilities remain a significant part of the region's economic infrastructure and shape the town's landscape today.
