Schwarzmilzferner

Schwarzmilzferner is a glacier located in the Allgäuer Alps between Mädelegabel and Hochfrottspitze. The ice surface sits at approximately 2450 meters elevation and displays relatively few visible cracks across its expanse today.

The glacier first appeared in cartographic records from 1774 and later on a border commission map around 1855. These early documents show the ice mass has been retreating steadily since those initial Alpine surveys.

The glacier stands as the last remaining ice mass in the Allgäu Alps, representing a natural monument of regional environmental changes in Tyrol.

The area is best suited for experienced mountaineers and researchers familiar with high-alpine conditions. The extreme elevation and unstable ice conditions require proper equipment and local guidance.

The glacier owes its survival to exceptionally high precipitation rates in this mountain area, which exceed several meters per year. These localized weather patterns allow the ice to persist despite warmer temperatures in surrounding regions.
