Kratzer, Mountain peak at Austria-Germany border, Allgäu Alps.

Kratzer is a 2,427 meter (7,962 foot) summit in the Allgau Alps that straddles the border between Austria and Germany. The mountain displays steep rocky cliffs on its northern face and gentle alpine meadows on the southern slopes, creating two distinct landscapes within a short distance.

The peak served as a natural border between Bavaria and Tyrol since medieval times, shaping how these mountain regions were divided and governed. This ancient boundary line remains significant today and defines the mountain's role as a meeting point between two distinct cultural areas.

The mountain has long served as a gathering place for local climbers and shepherds who share knowledge about safe routes and seasonal conditions. Today, hikers from both sides of the border meet here and maintain a strong sense of shared alpine tradition.

Marked trails approach the summit from both the Austrian and German sides, though the Oberstdorf route offers more facilities and shelter options along the way. Weather conditions change rapidly at this elevation, so sturdy hiking boots and navigation tools are essential regardless of which trail you choose.

The summit's defining feature is that visitors can literally stand with one foot in Austria and one foot in Germany at the same time. From this unusual vantage point, clear days reveal the Alps of four different countries visible in the distance.
