Sphaera, Modern sculpture at Kapitelplatz, Salzburg, Austria
Sphaera is a contemporary sculpture composed of a giant golden sphere topped by a human bronze figure. The entire installation rises to approximately 9 meters and rests on a wrought-iron frame in the center of Kapitelplatz.
German sculptor Stephan Balkenhol created this work in 2007 as a two-part artistic installation. It forms part of a broader project that includes a female counterpart positioned in Toscanini Court nearby.
The figure wears everyday clothes like black pants and a white shirt, which sets it apart from traditional sculptures in the area. This choice makes the artwork feel connected to the ordinary people who walk through the square daily.
The sculpture is freely accessible on Kapitelplatz in the heart of the old town, where you can visit it anytime. The location is easy to reach on foot and offers enough space to view the installation from multiple angles.
Though the golden sphere appears solid and weighty, it is actually made of glass-fiber reinforced plastic and weighs only about two tons. This lightweight material contrasts with the visual impact of the work, adding another layer of meaning to the installation.
