Residenzgalerie Salzburg, Art gallery in Salzburg Residenz, Austria.
Residenzgalerie Salzburg is housed in the east wing of the Archbishop's Palace and contains European paintings spanning the 16th to 19th centuries. The collection features works from Italy, France, Austria, and the Netherlands arranged throughout the ornate halls of the residence.
The gallery opened in 1923 following the collapse of the monarchy in Austria. The establishment aimed to rebuild the collection after many pieces from the archbishop-princes were lost during the Napoleonic Wars.
The artworks on display reflect the tastes of the archbishop-princes who once ruled Salzburg and their connections across Europe. Paintings from different regions show how ideas and styles traveled between Italy, France, and Central Europe during the early modern period.
The gallery is located within the DomQuartier Salzburg, a complex that groups together several historic buildings. Allow time to explore the different rooms since the collection spans across multiple floors.
The Czernin Collection acquired between 1980 and 1991 added an outstanding group of 17th-century paintings from the Dutch, Spanish, and French traditions. This addition transformed the museum's scope by introducing major European movements beyond the German-speaking world.
