Residenzplatz, Heritage square in Old Town Salzburg, Austria
The Residenzplatz is a large open square in central Salzburg surrounded by major buildings including the Cathedral and several historical palaces. The space is dominated by a central fountain and provides an open gathering area where the architecture of the surrounding structures can be appreciated.
A Prince-Archbishop commissioned the square in the late 1500s, removing more than fifty older buildings and a cemetery to create it. This transformation reshaped the city's core and established a new focal point for the community.
The fountain here displays carved stone figures and horses surrounded by mythological creatures crafted from local limestone. These artistic works form the visual centerpiece that visitors notice when they enter the square.
The square is easily walkable and offers many spots to sit and observe the surroundings. Year-round events are held here including outdoor markets and film screenings, each creating different atmospheres depending on the season.
During the 1980s and 1990s, this historic location became a venue for well-known international musicians. The open-air concerts brought modern entertainment to the classical surroundings.
