Salzburg Residenz, Prince-archbishops palace and art museum in Altstadt, Austria
Salzburg Residenz is a former prince-archbishop's palace and art museum located in the heart of the old town, featuring multiple ceremonial floors. The rooms display painted ceilings, period furnishings, and marble details, with a gallery dedicated to European paintings spanning several centuries.
Construction began in 1120, but the palace received its Renaissance appearance under Archbishop Wolf Dietrich Raitenau from 1587 to 1612. This transformation made it one of Central Europe's most important princely residences.
The gallery rooms reflect the personal taste of the prince-archbishops who collected and displayed European paintings as expressions of power and learning. Walking through these spaces, you see how art and authority were intertwined in their daily lives.
The palace is accessible daily through the DomQuartier complex, where you can explore at your own pace or join guided tours available in several languages. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended as the ceremonial rooms span multiple floors.
Mozart performed his first court recital at age seven in one of the conference rooms, an event that took place in this very space. The Carabinierisaal later became the site of the first opera performed north of the Alps.
