Panorama Museum Salzburg, Historical museum in Neue Residenz, Salzburg, Austria.
The Panorama Museum Salzburg displays a large circular painting that shows the city from multiple viewpoints with exceptional detail and precision. The artwork was expanded over time and now includes more than a hundred additional works by the same artist.
The work was created in 1829 by Johann Michael Sattler and depicts Salzburg during the Biedermeier period with precise architectural details. The collection later expanded to include works by his son Hubert Sattler, who adapted the concept to capture other European cities.
The museum displays works by Hubert Sattler, who captured scenes from around the world in detailed paintings that reflect the global connections of his era. These artworks show how artists of that time were fascinated by distant places and cultures.
The museum is currently closed for renovations and will move to the historic Orangery in the Mirabell Gardens in 2025. Plan your visit carefully by checking ahead, as the exact opening timing is still being finalized.
The painting was groundbreaking for its time because visitors used telescopes from a central platform to view fine details of the city's architecture up close. This innovative presentation method was entirely new in the 19th century and drew thousands of visitors.
