Wiener Metropol, Theatre in Hernals, Vienna, Austria
Wiener Metropol is a theater in the Hernals district of Vienna with three separate performance spaces suited to different types of shows. The main hall holds around 700 people standing or about 550 seated.
The building started in the early 1800s as a bakery with a printing house and was converted around 1860 into a dance hall known as the Glassalon. Over time it grew into the theater it is today.
The Wiener Metropol programs musicals, cabaret, concerts, and theater in a way that draws a mixed crowd from the neighborhood and across the city. A visit gives a good sense of what popular entertainment looks and feels like in Vienna today.
The venue is easy to reach by public transport in Hernals, so leaving the car behind is a good idea. Checking the program before you go helps you choose the right show and the right space within the building.
The outdoor Pawlatschen-Bühne stage is the only surviving open-air theater stage of its kind from around 1900 in Vienna's outer districts. It gives a rare look at how shows were staged in the city's suburbs before indoor venues became the norm.
