Währinger Park, Public park in Währing, Austria
Währinger Park is a public park in Vienna's 18th district on the grounds of a former cemetery. It features playgrounds, sports facilities including basketball courts and table tennis tables, sandpits, swings, slides, and green spaces set within a residential neighborhood.
The site served as Währinger Cemetery from 1783 to 1874, where many Viennese citizens were buried. In 1923 the cemetery closed and transformed into a park to provide green space for the expanding neighborhood.
A memorial grove preserves historical gravestones honoring composer Adalbert Gyrowetz and writer Caroline Pichler among others. These monuments serve as reminders of notable Viennese figures whose graves once occupied this ground.
The park is easily accessible on foot with multiple entrances from surrounding streets. Visitors can navigate clear pathways connecting playgrounds, sports facilities, and rest areas suitable for various ages and activities.
An oak tree planted by Mayor Jakob Reumann at the park's opening in October 1923 still stands in its original location. This tree serves as a living monument from when the cemetery transformed into a modern city park.
