Pfarrkirche Heiliger Georg in Sternberg, Wernberg, Parish church and cemetery in Wernberg, Austria.
The Pfarrkirche Heiliger Georg in Sternberg stands on a steep hill north of the South Highway, blending Romanesque and Gothic architectural styles. Its choir features Romanesque stonework while the nave is covered by Gothic ribbed vaulting.
Founded between 1170 and 1180 by the Counts of Sternberg, the church received its first documented mention as a parish church in 1285. It underwent several expansions and renovations over the following centuries.
The church holds a late Gothic baptismal font and a Lenten veil from 1629 that depict scenes from the Old and New Testaments. These treasures sit together as witnesses to religious craftsmanship across the centuries.
The building welcomes visitors and functions as an active religious center within the Roman Catholic Diocese of Gurk. Its hilltop position requires visitors to climb on foot, but rewards them with views over the Wernberg area.
Workers uncovered a large 16th-century sundial fresco hidden beneath later plaster during restoration in 1997. This discovery led to the restoration of decorative architectural details from the 18th century.
