Burgruine Hohenwart

Burgruine Hohenwart consists of stone remains from a medieval fortress perched on a rocky summit about 802 meters high south of Köstenberg. The ruins sit prominently on the hilltop and offer extensive views over Velden am Wörther See and the surrounding valley.

The fortress was built during medieval times to control trade routes and protect the surrounding area. Over the centuries, the structure was abandoned and gradually deteriorated into the remains visible today.

The site shows how medieval communities relied on high ground for safety and control. From this elevated position, residents could watch over the valley and monitor approaching travelers along important routes.

The site is accessible year-round, with several marked hiking trails leading to the ruins. Weather at the hilltop can change quickly, so visitors should bring warm clothing and sturdy footwear.

The ruins are called Črni Grad in Slovenian, which means Black Castle, reflecting its historical ties to the Slovenian region. This name remains alive in local stories and usage today.
