Velden am Wörther See

Velden am Wörther See is a market municipality in the Villach-Land District situated on the western shores of Lake Wörthersee. The settlement spans eight cadastral communities across approximately 53 square kilometers at an elevation of around 460 meters (1,510 feet).

The settlement was first recorded in 1263 as Campus and later as Velben in 1410, growing from a Roman road station connecting Villach and Magdalensberg. This location on an ancient trade route shaped its early growth.

The municipality maintains connections with sister towns in Slovenia and Italy, fostering cultural exchanges with neighboring regions. These partnerships shape local life and bring people from different countries together.

The municipality sits on the shores of Lake Wörthersee with good road access to Villach and neighboring areas. Local services and event information are available through the municipal website for planning visits or finding community activities.

Schloss Velden, originally built as a Renaissance manor house in 1545 and rebuilt in 1892, became known as a filming location for television productions. The castle remains a landmark that draws visitors interested in its architectural heritage and past use in media.
