Velden am Wörther See is a market municipality in the Villach-Land District situated on the western shores of Lake Wörthersee. The settlement spans eight cadastral communities across approximately 53 square kilometers at an elevation of around 460 meters (1,510 feet).
The settlement was first recorded in 1263 as Campus and later as Velben in 1410, growing from a Roman road station connecting Villach and Magdalensberg. This location on an ancient trade route shaped its early growth.
