Burgruine Altrosegg, Medieval castle ruin in Rosegg, Austria.
Burgruine Altrosegg is a medieval castle ruin on a hilltop at 478 meters (1,568 feet) elevation that overlooks the Rosental valley in Carinthia. The remaining stone fragments show the basic structure of a noble fortress with residential and defensive sections.
The castle was first recorded in 1239 and served as a residence for the Ras family until 1318 when foreign nobles took control. It later declined in importance and gradually fell into ruin.
The ruins embody medieval building traditions and show how nobles demonstrated their control over the valley through sturdy stone structures. Visitors can still see the foundations that speak to the power and influence of the people who once lived here.
The ruins are located within the Rosegg animal park grounds, allowing visitors to explore the site alongside wildlife observation. Good footwear is advisable since the terrain is rough and uneven with some steep sections to navigate.
Stones from the castle walls were reused in 1806 to build the tower of Rosegg parish church after French military occupation ended. This practical rebuilding directly links the fortress history to a structure visitors can still see in the village today.
